The focus on diversity in education is important. Every child has the right to play, and the school playground should support the inclusion of all students. In this article we will share our extensive expertise in inclusion including (wink) a recent example of a school’s inclusive playspace.

Proludic and inclusion – a long-term relationship

From the very beginning, inclusion has been a focus for Proludic. For almost two decades we have built and shared our knowledge and insights on play for all. Witnessing the impact of inclusive play on communities is something that our team deeply values. Let’s have a closer look at one of our recent inclusive projects at Port Macquarie Public School.

About Port Macquarie Public School

Port Macquarie Public School embraces diversity in education, offering both mainstream and supported learning classes. A strong commitment to providing an inclusive and supportive environment for every student is at the core of the school’s values. This explains the importance of a truly inclusive playground that allows all students to socialise and have equal play opportunities at the school.

Site visits for the win

Before the playground’s renewal, a site visit revealed a space in need of transformation due to exclusion and limited accessibility faced by many students. As we walked through the space, it became clear that the existing equipment lacked inclusion. Various barriers prevented children with diverse needs from fully participating in playtime. Our experts recognized the importance of transforming this playground into an inclusive, and engaging space where all children can play, learn, and thrive together.

A playground wishlist

After the site visit it was clear that the design had to tick the following boxes:

  • Activities that get everyone mingling, moving, and learning, regardless of age or ability.
  • An accessible playground where every single student can join the fun.
  • Sensory experiences galore: Think bright colors, musical fun, and interactive play panels.
  • Communication boards so even the non-verbal children can get in on the action.
  • Easy for teachers to keep an eye on things while the children enjoy their playtime.

With this project we delivered fun to every student at Port Macquarie Public School. When we went back to the school to visit the completed project our team were overjoyed to share in the experience of playing with the students and learning support staff to enjoy the playground together. During our visit we spoke to the Deputy Principal of Supported Learning, Tina Henshaw, and have received delightful insightful feedback.

It’s a whole school playground, mainstream classes use this playground as much as supported learning. Difference is celebrated and it’s a playspace for everyone.
