Sliding is one of the most popular activities in play areas. The many variations encourage children to continuously experiment with different sensations: siding down a slide, forwards, on their back, flat on their stomach; sliding along poles, and more.

Sliding is a sensorimotor activity. Sliding helps children develop greater awareness of their body and its capabilities. It helps them understand how to control their posture and position their body correctly in space. They learn how to manage their balance.

This also involves an element of risk-taking. Younger children often feel apprehensive about launching themselves into an empty space. However, the more they do this, the more their self-confidence grows.

For all ages, sliding brings sensations of speed and sometimes even a little burst of adrenaline.
