WINNER – 2018 KIDSAFE NATIONAL PLAYSPACE DESIGN AWARDS *
PUBLIC PLAYSPACES CATEGORY A <$500K
The ‘seafront’ playground is a custom rope play structure inspired by the sea and designed for young children
Site: Darwin Waterfront, Northern Territory
Client: Darwin Waterfront Corporation
Age Range: from 1 to 8 years old
Project delivered: by Proludic’s NT distributor NT Sports and Playground surfacing
Darwin Waterfront Corporation engaged Proludic’s NT distributor NT Sports and Playground Surfacing to provide a playground that would fit within the unique seaside precinct. The brief was to provide an “innovative concept for a playground that compliments the high amenity and vibrant lifestyle at the precinct”.
Proludic prepared the design of the playground, and designed and manufactured the innovative play equipment. The playground features a customised rope play course and boardwalk, slide, tunnels, climbing wall, inclusive swing and a seaweed inspired balance trail.
The custom play area created by Proludic is based on the concept of the “relationship between the maritime world and children” where children are immersed in a three-dimensional play environment with rope games mounted on undulating shapes, multi-seat pods and a wide slide. They can slide, climb, crawl and swing their way around the play equipment and experience the feeling of braving the waters of a rough sea.
The Pontoon Trail (boardwalk structure) symbolises the dunes formed by the wind. Its undulating shape creates dynamism in the play area.
Structural elements of the playground are used for subtle lighting at night, ensuring an artistic feel.
Proludic’s NT distributor NT Sports and Playground Surfacing faced many challenges during the installation of this world first playground, but persevered to deliver a fantastic playground for the Darwin Waterfront Corporation and the Darwin community. Well done to Bob Fleming and his team!
General Manager of the Darwin Waterfront Corporation, Samuel Burke said:
“The play equipment caters for children between two to eight years of age and provides another offer for parents of young children to enjoy when they come to the Darwin Waterfront. We expect that it will extend the length of stay for our existing visitors and hopefully attract more families to this iconic Darwin precinct.”
* 2018 KIDSAFE NATIONAL PLAYSPACE DESIGN AWARDS
At the Kidsafe Play Symposium held at NSW Parliament House in Sydney on November 22, 2018, the 2018 Kidsafe National Playspace Design Awards were announced and the Darwin Waterfront Playground was declared the winner of the Public Playgrounds Category A < $500K. There were over 48 entries in this category of the awards.
The Kidsafe National Playspace Design Awards are held every 2 years to recognise excellence and innovation in the provision of safe, creative playspaces across Australia. The Awards showcase the achievements of communities working with educators, designers and the playground industry in creating amazing play environments in public spaces, schools, and education and care services. Entries were judged by play and playground experts. The judges looked at safety, quality, innovation, shade, the fun factor and evidence of community consultation. Judges commented on the outstanding quality of entries.
CEO Kidsafe NT, Kellie Shewring, said “that the project won because the judges agreed that this is a very exciting playground which caters for young children and their families, providing facilities that encourage everyone to stay and play! The equipment is not ‘traditional’ and promotes imaginative and explorative play against the backdrop of the beautiful Darwin Harbour.”
Nineteen leaders in playspace design across Australia have been recognised in the 2018 Kidsafe National Playspace Design Awards. Nature play featured in designs with community consultation and safety being considered at a high standard.
